If you checked out my About Me page, you already know my name is Belén Vélez and I am a single mom with an amazing six-year old (when originally published – now he’s 8).
Life in our home is definitely interesting. We don’t live like the Jones’ or the Smiths, or even the Rivera’s down the block! Living with neurological conditions, autoimmune disorders, multiple food allergies and still keeping a positive outlook is difficult at times. I won’t lie. Like anything else, it takes work. But as Les Brown says, they aren’t challenging days, they are character building days…
We have MAJOR obstacles in our way including Autism, Neurosarcoidosis, Type 1 Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, Leaky Gut Syndrome, Adrenal Fatigue, Raynaud’s Syndrome… And don’t forget the stress! Lots and lots of stress. …But everyone has their hurdles… You know the frustration of drinking script after script and only feeling worse. You have faced the helpless feeling when your child is crying in the middle of the night from an ear infection and the third round of antibiotics still is not working… You know how much salad you can eat before you get totally fed up from gaining weight instead of losing it… We’re all in the same boat!
Everyone chooses a different path in life. Sometimes we know early on what that path may be… Sometimes we are shoved in a particular direction and we don’t even realize how it happened. Such is my case. Ten years ago, I never would have thought that health and wellness would be my daily focus. But my path took a hard, sharp left and I was facing my own mortality. I needed to make changes, and fast!
Emily Perl Kingsley wrote a beautiful essay titled, Welcome to Holland. In it she describes planning a fabulous vacation to Italy and unexpectedly arriving in Holland. I think everyone has felt this at one time or another, whether they have a child with special needs, daily management of a chronic condition, or even weight gain they find difficult to manage.
Everyone has their challenges… Everyone has issues they need to work through… I am not special. We are not different. We have simply learned strategies to make the journey a pleasurable one. We take the time to admire the windmills and smell the tulips. We allow the beautiful miracles that surround us every day to guide our healing, emotionally and physically.
…it doesn’t matter where you land. What’s more important is what you make of your journey…
-Emily Perl Kingsley
My mission now is to guide others find their road to wellness. If you need some company, I don’t mind traveling down your path with you. Being in pain is not normal. Having an upset stomach should not happen daily. Doctors don’t have every answer. There are alternatives.
I’ve said it before and I’ll keep repeating it until everyone hears me… Kids will eat their vegetables. Essential oils really do work. Anti-inflammatory foods actually help heal the body. It doesn’t have to cost you a fortune in food bills and doctor’s appointments. Better yet, you do not have to feel sick all the time!
One small change can get you started.
This is definitely Not What the Dr Ordered.
